The perfect 48-hour guide to Ålesund

Not sure how to make the most of your weekend in Ålesund? Well, you’re in luck because we have made a guide to getting you started! Ålesund has been recognized as one of the world’s most stunning port cities by National Geographic. It’s a city bursting with opportunities and beauty at every street corner. As the saying goes, “It’s impossible to walk swiftly in Ålesund - there is simply too much to see.”

We couldn’t agree more with National Geographic, and that’s why we’ve put together the ultimate 48-hour guide to various activities you can enjoy over the weekend. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re a seasoned traveler, going solo or with family and friends, we’ve got something for every taste.

Friday

Lunch at Dampsentralen

No great weekend starts without a proper lunch, and that’s precisely what you’ll get at Dampsentralen! They open their doors bright and early, offering delicious coffee, refreshing smoothies, and mouthwatering dishes. After fueling up with some caffeine, you’ll be all set to explore the city by foot (remember, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing)!

Explore Ålesund on Foot

Ålesund is famous for its unique Art Nouveau architecture, a result of a fire that destroyed the town center at the beginning of last century. The best place to start the sightseeing is at Brosundet. Have a seat on the benches by the bridge and soak in the view. Then, continue your journey to Moloveien and out to Molja, Ålesund’s lighthouse. If you’re still hungry for views, follow the road to the city park and start climbing the stairs to The Aksla viewpoint. You’re only 418 steps away from a view that will take your breath away.

If you’d rather spend your time indoors, why not visit some of the city’s art galleries like Khåk or Kube. Alternatively, you can swing by the aquarium, which is perfect for families or those curious about underwater life.

Dinner at T2

As the evening approaches and your stomach starts to rumble, you can indulge in a beloved Norwegian Friday tradition - Friday tacos! T2 serves up Mexican-inspired cuisine, providing you with the opportunity to enjoy Ålesund’s largest outdoor dining area with stunning sunset views. Here, you can kick back, savor delicious dishes, and maybe even witness something exciting on T2’s stage! It’s the perfect spot to wrap up Friday night with good food and great vibes.

Saturday

Saturday or ‘Lørdag’ in Norwegian, interestingly enough comes from the Norse word “Laurdag.” The word originally meant laundry day or bathing day. So why not kickstart the day by the water, keeping in tune with tradition?

Morning by the Water

If you want to have a calm and peaceful beginning to your day, you can choose from a variety of options. Uteguiden offers kayaking tours in Brosundet, where you can explore the archipelago and have a blast in the water. If you prefer to mix a little heat with a cool splash, make your way to Svai Sauna. Hotel Brosundets also offers a unique experience with outdoor bathtubs where you can enjoy the view while relaxing - extremely fun, to say the least!

Nature Hike

If water isn’t your thing, you can explore Ålesund’s natural beauty on foot. Sukkertoppen is an excellent choice for a fantastic hike, while Storhaugen offers a slightly more relaxed experience. If you’re up for a bigger challenge, you’re right in the heart of the Sunnmøre Alps, and all you have to do is follow the trails to explore these majestic mountains.

Lunch at Bryt Tapas

After a morning filled with activities, hunger is sure to strike. Take a break and enjoy a delicious lunch at Bryt, located in the heart of Brosundet. Bryt offers Norwegian tapas with a Spanish twist, allowing you to sample a diverse array of delectable small plates that represent the season. Keep in mind that Bryt exclusively serves lunch on Saturdays, so it’s the perfect time to pay them a visit!

Burgers and beers, or a Costal Culinary Experience

As the evening approaches, you have several great options. If you’re in the mood for a delicious burger, we recommend a trip to Molo - Ålesund’s only microbrewery. They serve freshly grilled burgers and craft-brewed beers in an atmosphere that is as varied as flavorful. Here, you can choose between indoor and outdoor seating, and there’s even shuffleboard and darts for extra fun!

If you want to experience a memorable encounter with local traditions, be sure to visit Bro. Here, you’ll get an authentic taste of coastal cuisine, where you’ll be introduced to the incredible ingredients found in the fauna and flora of Vestlandet. This is also the place to savor some fine wine!

Evening Entertainment

As the evening approaches and you feel like putting on your dancing shoes, fear not! Ålesund’s nightlife has something for everyone’s taste.

Club at Damp – For those who love dancing to electronic music, Club at Damp is the place to be.

T2 Scene – With DJ performances, a lively atmosphere, and a fantastic outdoor dining area, T2 Scene is perfect for a fun evening.

Bryt Bar – Here, you can enjoy laid-back beats and delicious cocktails.

So, whether you prefer to spend the day by the water, explore nature on foot, or enjoy culinary experiences, Ålesund has something for everyone. Keep exploring the city, experience its unique atmosphere, and enjoy the best of what this beautiful city has to offer!

Bon appétit and have a great weekend!
